The Cat Who Wished to be a Bird

A long long time ago, there lived a tribe of people who were the descendants of felines. They lived happily together in peace and harmony.

One family was an exception. They were always noisy and had arguments all the time. Why were they always arguing? Well, the only daughter of that family, that is, Mr. and Mrs. Q's daughter, wanted to learn how to fly. It was absolutely absurd for a feline to fly, or so her parents thought.

"Yo-yo," Mr. Q said in a very serious tone, "a nice young lady like you should not be dreaming about achieving such ludicrous things."

"But papa, you said yourself that I can be anything I want! And I want to be a flying bird!" Yo-yo exclaimed.

These arguments would on without end.

One day, Yo-yo became so fed up with her family, that she took off on her own to find someone who was willing to teach her how to fly. She walked far away from the feline clan with her little backpack, in search of potential flying masters.

She met a little brown kiwi in the bush.

"Hello little bird, can you teach me how to fly?" She asked. The kiwi was afraid at first, for he knew cats ate birds, but seeing that Yo-yo was friendly, he answered: "I'm sorry, cat-girl. For I am not a flying bird." Yo-yo thanked the kiwi, and walked away sadly.

Then, she met an ostrich sitting in her nest. Surely those huge wings would be able to fly, Yo-yo thought to herself. And she asked the ostrich: "Hi there, Mrs. Ostrich, can you teach me the secrets of flight?" The ostrich shook her head: "Sorry, dear. I wouldn't have a clue. And besides, I have eggs to hatch." So Yo-yo walked along disappointed.

On her journey she was able to encounter many birds, the dodo, the chicken, the emu, the *takahe, the *kea...but they were all flightless birds. Yo-yo became desperate, and she climbed a large tree to look for bird's nest. Unfortunately, her uninvited presence only earned her a bunch of scoldings and shrieks from every bird family in the tree.

Yo-yo sat on a branch after apologizing to all of the poor birds. She sighed deeply and watched the blue sky. How wonderful would it be if I was able to reach those clouds, she thought.

Suddenly, out of the blue, swooped down a majestic figure. It landed swiftly on the same branch as Yo-yo was sitting on. It was a magnificent eagle standing before her. She was completely blown away by the eagle's flight. For she had never seen a bird fly so high before.

"Please be my master and teach me how to fly, Mr. Eagle!" Yo-yo begged.

The eagle laughed, "Hohoho, but of course, child!"

And he stretched out his large wings and took hold of Yo-yo's shoulders with his strong talons, and they were off! They flew up, up and up. Into the clouds, over rivers and mountains and forests.

Yo-yo had always dreamed of this moment. She closed her eyes, tears formed. Her dream was finally about to come true.

The eagle flew far with her. "When are you going to teach me how to fly like you?" Yo-yo asked. "Soon." The eagle replied.

They arrived at the top of the highest mountain. And the eagle put her down gently. "This is where I live, young cat-girl. Meet my family." said the eagle. Yo-yo looked, and there were three fluffy grey chicks sitting in a nest. "Hello!" Yo-yo greeted.

The chicks came closer to this stranger. They examined her closely. And they tore her into pieces and ate her.

The eagle is, after all, a bird of prey. They would never let an easy prey like Yo-yo escape.
